welcome
In response to the growing demand for gallery space accessible to the region's diverse range of artists, the Cairns Regional Council is proud to welcome you to c.1907 contemporary artspace. Located in the central hub of City Place, and with thousands of weekly visitors, this artists  space  reflects the original  intent of the School of Arts  to "foster habits of intellectual intercourse"  and to "stimulate and encourage education of the masses". The c.1907 contemporary artspace demonstrates councils ongoing commitment to "Building Vibrant Communities" (Corporate Plan 2009 -2014) and  acknowledges the value that arts and cultural activities add to the life of residents and visitors alike.  c.1907 contemporary artspace continues the long running contribution of the School of Arts Building to the cultural fibre of Cairns. We encourage emerging and established artists to become involved with the space and for the community to enjoy the work presented.

C.1907 – POP UP SERIES
'Celebrate' 12 - 16 April 2011

Circa 1907 opened in April 2010 with a commitment to supporting and promoting a presentation of local contemporary work, with an emphasis on pushing conventional boundaries. With a successful and diverse year behind us, we are now looking to celebrate the year ahead, a year that builds on the foundations put down already, launching into the future with new concepts and new ideas.
In recognition of this milestone, a collection of artists have been asked to come to together for the C 1907 “Celebrate” exhibition. With the question of what evokes the spirit of celebration for the artist, this exhibition has become a cacophony of mediums and artists stories featuring some of Cairns’ most prolific and emerging artists.
Invited artists: Roland Nancarrow, Kristin Tennyson, Tanya Ashworth, Hayley Gillespie, Adrian Wolf, Kylie Burke, Jill Chism, Danelle Masters, Leonie Besley, Lynette Griffiths.
Opening Friday 15 April 5.30 – 8pm by Cr Val Schier, Mayor of Cairns Regional Council

POPUP SERIES – MARCH – JUNE 2011 Visit C. 1907 over the next couple of months and you will find a diverse range of exhibitions ‘popping up’. C. 1907 is a celebrating the start to its second year of providing gallery space to established and emerging artists, with an innovative series of “Pop Up” exhibitions.
The Pop Up concept was developed to provide diversity and accessibility to both artists and the public. Breaking away from the established routine of month long exhibitions, the Pop Ups will see the space host a collection of local visual and musical artists. The short, sharp format will bring a new level of vibrancy and energy to the space, exploring transience; moving in and moving out, and the challenges and artistic diversity that this presents.

Photographs

Effervescence: to give off bubbles is a series of photographic images that reveal texture, shape, form and drama. The images exist as a result of situation and experimentation: this contemporary series of images endeavour to capture the unusual. “My motivation when I capture an image is to create an individual artwork that is beautiful to the viewer’s eye. Images are planned and lighting is carefully considered. Photography is my outlet and through each photographic experience I receive, grow and learn.” Rebecca Claire Edwards graduated with a Bachelor of Photography from James Cook University in 2005. Rebecca is a Freelance Photographer and artist, and was a mentee in the 2010 Starburst Regional Mentoring Program managed by Youth Arts Queensland. Rebecca continues to exhibit her digital art in numerous group exhibitions throughout Far North Queensland.

Sunday 9 January
DOMESTIC8 - SCULPTURAL ASSEMBLAGE C19
Domestic8 explores the notion of paid versus unpaid work. Through sculptural assemblage, Louisa Ennis-Thomas investigates 8 domestic processes, in a series reflecting the largely repetitive nature of household labour and its inherent value to society. ‘Household work is no less valuable than more traditionally recognized forms of labour. Domestic8 is a celebration of the largely invisible work which takes place within the family home,’ Ennis-Thomas explains. Louisa Ennis-Thomas regularly exhibits in group exhibitions in Cairns and Melbourne. Domestic8 is her initial solo show. She has also been selected for a solo exhibition later this year, at Cairns Regional Gallery as part of the prestigious LEAP programme. She is a founding member of Knock Knock Contemporary Artists’ Initiative. The official opening for ‘domestic8’ is Friday 14th January at 6.30pm. All welcome!
